After many years of collecting costume jewelry which included beads that needed to be re-strung or re-designed, my inspiration to delve into the hobby of beading came about after being inspired by a friend who had beaded for many years. Since then, my efforts have expanded into a likeable hobby and given me an opportunity to create and gather a collection of necklaces which appear in this blog. The blog came about after being helped by my daughter who wanted me to expand into a new venture showing jewelry in my collection. "Opportunity knocks twice," as they say, and this story gives two examples of me opening the door.

The Beading Needle

Anyone who does beading will have stories to tell, such as looking for that needle that somehow dropped to the floor or disappeared in a magical way. Not wanting the needle to be lying in wait for an unfortunate cause of injection, my pursuit was on-going and often, and most often on my hands and knees. The vacuum cleaner was hauled out to carefully remove it from the carpet. This only somewhat allayed my concern that it would certainly find the needle. Carefully placing the needle each time of use in a visible spot, will assure me of it being there and not elsewhere. Beading needles are fine gauge and have a sharp point. Twisted needles, used for very fine work, is like working with a hair from your head. Losing one of them and finding them, takes patience and skill.

Proportion-wise the three things pictured are very small. The actual size of the
Bakelite box with a decorated top is 26 millimeters in diameter and helps
to establish the mini category. The chain has tiny pearl-like beads and the ceramic

A ten foot long string of small crystal beads with cut steel spacers shows off nicely
under the paper umbrella. The beads can be wrapped around the neck many times
and secured with a small clasp. These beads originally were on an old beaded
purse that was beyond repair. I removed them and created this long strand.
